PIENZA & MONTEPULCIANO

Pienza, a small town near Siena, is a rare example
of Renaissance architecture. Defined the "ideal city",
the "utopian city", it represents one of the best-planned
Renaissance towns. Its location in the middle of Val d'Orcia and
its views from the walls are breathtaking. The center of Pienza
was completely redesigned by Pope Pius II in
Renaissance times. The architect Bernardo Rossellino was commissioned
to build a Duomo, papal palace and town hall. The construction
was completed in four years. The town is also famous for the production
of various kinds of special Pecorino Cheese.
Montepulciano is encircled by walls and fortifications
designed by Antonio da Sangallo. Inside the walls, the streets
are crammed with Renaissance-style palaces and churches, but the
town is chiefly known for its wonderful local Vino Nobile
wines. A long, winding street called the Corso climbs
up into the main square, which crowns on the summit of the hill
in Piazza Grande. The city is also characterized by the presence
of various medieval cellars built under the noble
palaces of the historical center.
What will you do?
- Stop for a panoramic view of the Val d'Orcia
- Visit of the Renaissance town of Pienza, the
home town of the Pope Pio II
- Visit of the medieval town of Montepulciano
with its wonderful streets and Palaces.
